Corne keyboard with ZMK

The layers, shortcuts and combos of my split keyboard, written as code.

My own configuration

The main layer.

What it is

A 42-key Corne keyboard has no numpad or arrow keys, so everything lives in layers. This is my ZMK configuration: home-row modifiers, combos for everyday shortcuts and a gaming layer, with the map drawn out.

Firmware: the ZMK project.

What it does

  • Layers for numbers, symbols, movement, mouse, media, function and gaming.
  • Home-row modifier keys and two-key combos for undo, copy, paste, save and search.
  • A custom alt-tab and shortcuts for virtual desktops and the task manager.
  • Bluetooth with several devices and the map drawn automatically from the configuration.

What I did

  • I designed the layers of a 42-key keyboard, where every key has to count for several: numbers, symbols, movement, mouse, media, function and gaming.
  • I tuned the timing of home-row modifier keys, the combos and a custom alt-tab, commit by commit over weeks.
  • I wrote the whole configuration as code, versioned in Git, with the map drawn from it.
  • It’s the same drive that later led to my QMK keymap: making the keyboard adapt to me.
