Keychron V3 Max with QMK

My keymap for the Keychron V3 Max: four layers, editing combos, a gaming mode with auto-run and lighting that changes with every layer.

The gaming layer: no Windows key, clean A/D and auto-run.

What it is

A keyboard with tailor-made firmware. Keychron maintains a QMK fork with wireless support for its keyboards; on that base I built my own keymap for the V3 Max with a knob: one layer for work, one for functions, one for gaming and one for numpad and mouse, each with its own lighting.

Based on QMK Firmware (GPL-2.0) and Keychron’s fork, which provides the wireless support and the V3 Max hardware.

What it does

  • Four layers: productivity base, function, gaming and numpad with mouse.
  • Two-key combos for undo, redo, cut, copy, paste, save and commenting a line.
  • Caps Word with both Shift keys: capitals last only one word or identifier.
  • A gaming layer with no Windows key, A/D cleanup so they never clash, and an auto-run on Q+W+E.
  • A function layer with media, brightness, switching between three devices over Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz, and a shortcut to flash mode.
  • The knob controls volume on every layer, and each layer has its own lighting animation.

What I did

  • I built my own four-layer keymap for the V3 Max, written in C on top of Keychron’s base.
  • I turned key pairs into shortcuts, to undo, copy, paste or save without taking my hands off the letters.
  • I solved movement for gaming: if you press A and D together the last one wins, and a combo keeps W held to run until you decide to stop.
  • I made the keyboard explain itself: each layer changes the lighting animation and lights up its own shortcuts.
  • I documented every layer with a drawn diagram, so the keymap can be understood without reading a line of C.
  • I’ve been refining it since July 2025, combo by combo, as I use it.
